IMCO Committee votes to approve copyright opinion

– Par­lia­men­t’s In­ter­nal Mar­ket and Con­sumer Pro­tec­tion Com­mit­tee has voted 19 against 7 with 6 ab­sten­tions to ap­prove an opin­ion on a new copy­right di­rec­tive. While com­pro­mises have been added to the orig­i­nal draft, it is nonethe­less still ex­pected to dif­fer sig­nif­i­cantly from the Com­mis­sion’s orig­i­nal pro­posal. ∎

European Commission’s proposed new right for press publishers is mired in controversy

The new press pub­lish­ers right in the Com­mis­sion’s pro­posed copy­right di­rec­tive is a rad­i­cal mea­sure aimed at sup­port­ing a news in­dus­try in peril. The pro­posal may how­ever have se­vere un­in­tended con­se­quences.
